Audi R8 V12 TDI

After building the Lamborghini Murcielago, there were some things I wanted to try to build differently. So I looked around and the Audi R8 was another favorite exotic car for me and Audi had just unveiled the R8 TDI which uses Diesel and has an updated more aggressive styling than the original R8. I had previously found blueprints and just found a lot of reference photos at www.jalopnik.com, so I snagged them all and started work.

The TDI is slightly different than the blueprints I had, but they are close enough. The blueprints also have measurements so I laid out measurement objects in Maya, which are hard to see, and scaled the scene appropriately. Then I constructed a curve network following the blueprints.

I started creating polygons by snapping to the curves, appending and extruding. I use the Split Polygon and Insert Edge Loop tools often and tons of snapping to curves and vertices. I also switch between the smooth polygon preview ('3') and normal polygon mode ('1').

I split the shell into different parts where the seams of the sheetmetal are and continued refining and adding detail. Eventually I mirrored and joined the halves of the car together.

So I have been working on this here and there when I have the time. Just modeling away.

To be continued...
